by Todd Stauffer If there's one lesson this wretched year has taught us, it's that denial isn't an effective governing strategy. For instance, denying that you lost an election—by tens of thousands of votes in swing states and 6 million votes nationally and then crafting bald lies about voter-fraud claims—hasn't worked.

by Todd Stauffer As Gov. Tate Reeves learned this past week, the most powerful public office in Mississippi isn't actually that of governor. While Reeves has been on Facebook Live opening businesses ahead of the official guidance even from this White House, he ran into a brick wall when he decided the Legislature would have no say in spending $1.25 billion of CARES Act funds.
by Todd Stauffer I'm a fan of the holiday season. I like the music, lights, decorations and schlocky movies. And one of the pleasures of the holidays is making a special effort to get out to a walkable urban environment and do some "shopping."
by Todd Stauffer ![]() You may have noticed our emphasis this year on podcasting—the "Let's Talk Jackson" podcast is about 14 biweekly episodes in. We've already had a few spinoffs, including "Let's Talk Jackson Politics," and, just this past week, we recorded our first (occasional) episode of "Let's Talk Jackson Art." Photo by Amber Helsel This issue we celebrate moving into our 18th year of publishing as a voice for Jacksonians who want to see progress in the capital city and the Magnolia State. It's been quite a ride!
by Todd Stauffer Welcome to another "BOOM Jackson" edition of the Jackson Free Press. This issue serves two major purposes. One, it's a three-month look ahead at arts and cultural events in the Jackson metro. Two, we do the BOOM edition quarterly, with a focus on local entrepreneurship and economic development—stuff I love!
by Todd Stauffer It has been an interesting holiday season so far for the Jackson Free Press. Over the Thanksgiving break, for instance, our website was on fire with national attention due to Ashton Pittman's reporting on Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, and we were fielding all sorts of requests for photo rights, TV appearances, radio appearances—all while trying to keep up with a reasonable (for these times) moderating tone in the comments on stories and a variety of reader inquiries from around the United States.
